States with big climate goals strip local power to block green projects

A wind farm project was initially proposed by clean energy developers in Montcalm County, mid-Michigan. However, in 2022, local voters rejected the idea and recalled seven local officials who had backed the project. Michigan and over a dozen other states are aiming to change the decision-making dynamics by gaining the authority to override local restrictions. This would enable state authorities to make the final decisions on the approval or disapproval of locations for large-scale utility projects.
