Scientists indicate scorching summer across India this year

Scientists with IMD and top weather experts have indicated a possibility of a scorching summer in India this year with a strong EL Nino currently underway. “El Nino conditions may start weakening slightly after February this year. However, the conditions are still expected to continue till June after which we can see ENSOneutral conditions (No El Nino or La Nina),” said D S Pai, head, Environment Monito- ring and Research Centre (EMRC), IMD, New Delhi.

‘Glaciers retreat, may cause water shortage in Ganga’

In the first detailed "inventory of glaciers" at the Alaknanda river basin, which contributes the maximum water to river Ganga, scientists from IISc and IITs discovered a reduction of 59 sq km in the glacier area over a period of almost 50 years, between 1968 and 2020.
